Because He Lives, We Rise From Death

Called By Name

Because He Lives, We Rise From Death and Are Called Into New Life

This Week’s Sermon

The resurrection is God’s personal invitation to rise from death and step into the eternal life Jesus secured for us.

The world was still dark when Mary approached the tomb. She carried spices in her hands and grief in her heart, expecting to tend to a dead body. But nothing about this morning would go as expected. The stone was rolled away. The grave clothes were folded. Light broke into the darkness. And the greatest announcement in history was delivered to grieving women who came in faithfulness and love: “He is not here, for He has risen.”

The resurrection is not symbolic. It is not metaphor. It is not memory. Jesus is alive - walking, speaking, reigning, restoring. And because He lives, everything changes. The resurrection proves Jesus is who He claimed to be. It breaks the power of dead things. It calls us personally by name. It invites us into a new life that begins now and lasts forever.

Mary’s life didn’t change when she saw Jesus - it changed when He called her name. That is the moment God wants for every believer: the moment when the risen Christ speaks your name, awakens your heart, and calls you out of the grave into newness of life.

  • John 11:25 — Jesus declares He is the Resurrection and the Life.

  • Luke 24:1–5 — The women discover the empty tomb and hear, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?”

  • Romans 6:4–6 — We are united with Christ in His death and resurrection.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 — In Christ, the old is gone and the new has come.

  • John 20:11–16 — Jesus calls Mary by name, revealing the personal nature of resurrection.

  • John 20:21–22 — Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on His disciples.

  • Romans 10:9 — Salvation through confession and belief in the risen Christ.

Reflection

Here are the truths we carried home this week.

The resurrection is not just an event to remember - it is a reality to live in. Many of us, like Mary, stand in the place of resurrection while still living in the reality of loss. We look for life in dead things: achievement, relationships, control, distraction, wealth, comfort, or escape. But dying things were never meant to bring life. They can stimulate, distract, or numb — but they cannot resurrect.

Jesus calls us out of the grave and into a new of life. He calls us by name. He invites us to lay down the old patterns, the old grave clothes, the old ways of thinking, and step into the life He purchased for us. The resurrection is personal. It is the moment when the risen Jesus speaks your name and awakens your heart to hope again.

A Prayer for This Week

Let Your risen life reshape my heart, my mind, and my steps today.

Jesus, thank You for conquering sin, death, and the grave. Thank You for calling me by name and inviting me into new life. Help me lay down the dead things I’ve been clinging to and walk in the fullness of Your resurrection power. Renew my mind, strengthen my spirit, and awaken my heart to Your presence. Teach me to live with hope, purpose, and faith. I surrender my life to You today.

Amen.

Renewed Mind, Resurrected Life

Thesis

You can’t live a resurrected life with a buried mindset.

Preview

Next week we explore how resurrection life begins with a new identity and continues with a renewed mind. Jesus didn’t rise so we could stay the same — He rose so we could think, live, and walk differently. Resurrection life is a daily journey that reveals a new future.
